Virus and Popup Removal

The short and simple instructions:

Download and run in the following order: (Takes less than 10 minutes)
AIMFix.exe
VundoFix.exe
BeagleFix.exe

Install, update and scan with the following popup removal programs: (Could take up to 1 hour)
Adaware.exe
Spybot.exe

Lastly, in Internet Explorer go to housecall.trendmicro.com and use their free online scanner. (This online scan could take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours to complete)

If you have problems with any of these programs refer to the appropriate advanced section below to get a more in-dept explanation.

Advanced Explanation

The following steps 2-7 are essential in removing viruses, trojans and popup programs from your computer but you have a much greater chance of cleaning your machine if you follow step 1, if you can???t get step 1 to work, skip it and continue on with the other steps. Even if your computer no longer boots successfully into Windows, it may still be able to boot into Safe Mode allowing you to clean it.

  1. Booting your computer into Windows Safe Mode. Turn off the computer if it is currently on. Turn on your computer and every three seconds or so tap the F8 key. A menu with a black background should appear. Select ???Safe Mode with Networking??? to boot the computer into Safe Mode. A warning message will appear stating that you are working in Safe Mode, select yes to continue.
  2. AIMfix.exe. Even if you???re not sure if you got infected from AIM we still recommend completing this step. Download and run AIMfix.exe. If any infected files are found it will automatically remove them, the scan should only take a few seconds and will come up with a message telling you to hit the ???Enter??? button to close the window.
  3. VundoFix.exe. This is probably the most prevalent infection on campus and this step should not be skipped. Download and run VundoFix.exe. After executing the file, select "Scan for Vundo". If any files are found after the scan finishes click on "Remove Vundo"
  4. BeagleFix.exe. Download and run FxBeagle.exe. Click on "Start" and let the utility scan (it may appear to be frozen but if you give the utility a couple minutes it will work). If you are in Windows Safe Mode the box telling you that you???re in Safe Mode will reappear, click "yes" to continue back into Safe Mode. Once the scan finishes continue to the next step.
  5. Adaware.exe. Download and install Adware.exe. During the install just leave the default settings and keep clicking "next" to install it. After the install is complete, uncheck "Open the help file now" and leave the other 2 options checked. After the scan is completed there will be a list of infections found on your computer. Right click on one of the check-mark boxes on the left hand side. Click on "Select all objects" from the menu that appears. All the boxes should now have a check-mark in them. Selecting "Next" will remove all of the selected infections. At this point close out of Adaware.
  6. Spybot.exe. Download and install Spybot.exe. After it finishes installing, click through the wizard, keep hitting "next" until the wizard closes. Select "Search for Updates"; select and download any updates found. Once the updates are downloaded, click on the "Search & Destroy" icon in the far upper left corner of the screen. Select "Check for problems" and the scan will begin. When it finishes select "Fix Selected Problems".
  7. Housecall. housecall.trendmicro.com. Select ???"Scan Now. It???s Free!". Select "Scan Now. It's Free" Again. Check off "Yes, I agree" and select "Launching HouseCall". At this point you have a choice of running two slightly different versions of HouseCall; if you can, select the Java Based Housecall Kernel. If that option is not available, select the ???Browser Plug-in??? version. A couple minutes will go by as files are transferred but eventually a menu will appear and you???ll want to select ???Scan complete computer for malware, grayware and vulnerabilities???. If you look on the left hand side of the page you can see the status of the scan, first the program will transfer files it needs to start the scan and then the actual scan will start. The scan can take any where from half an hour to 2 hours to complete depending on the speed of the computer. Towards the top of the web page you'll notice a gray tab labeled "Results". Click on the "Results" tab to display any infected files on your computer. The results page may be blank for quite a while before and during the scan, just leave the results page up until the scan is completed.
