Computing Resources
Purpose
Use of Westfield State College computing resources is for purposes related
to the College's mission. All classes of computer service users may use
computing resources only for purposes related to their studies, their
instruction, the discharge of their duties as employees, their official
business with the College and other College-sanctioned activities. The
use of Westfield State College computing resources for commercial purposes is
not permitted. This policy specifically addresses ethical and
facilitative usage.
Policy
- Ethical Usage:
Computing resources will be used in accordance with the
high ethical standards of the College. Examples of unethical use follow.
- Violations of computer system security.
- Unauthorized use of computer accounts, access codes or network
identification numbers assigned to others.
- Intentional use of computer telecommunication facilities in
ways that unnecessarily impede the computing activities of others (randomly
initiating interactive electronic communications or e-mail exchanges,
overuse of interactive network utilities, and so forth).
- Use of computing facilities for private business purposes
unrelated to the mission of the College or College life.
- Academic dishonesty (plagiarism, cheating).
- Violation of software license agreements.
- Violation of network usage policies and regulations.
- Violation of another user's privacy.
- Violation of student conduct regulations.
- Violation of College policies and procedures.
- Facilitative usage:
Westfield State College computing resources users
can facilitate computing in the Westfield State College environment in many
ways. Collegiality demands the practice of facilitative computing.
It includes:
- Regular deletion of unneeded files from one's account on central machines.
- Refraining from overuse of connect time, information storage
space, printing facilities or processing capacity.
- Refraining from overuse of interactive network utilities.
- The installation, for any purpose, or use of any peer-to-peer
file sharing application (such as, but not limited to, KaZaA, FastTrack,
Gnutella, BeatShare, Limeware, etc.) is not permitted on the Westfield State
College network. In addition, any other network-based, nonacademic
application that consumes the College's limited bandwitdth may be limited or
restricted. The Chief Information Officer must approve the
installation of any server or server-based application of the Westfield
State College network.
- Sanctions
Violation of the policies described above for legal and
ethical use of computing resources will be dealt with seriously.
Violators will be subject to the normal disciplinary procedures of the
College, and in addition, the loss of computing privileges may result.
Illegal acts involving Westfield State College computing resources may also be
subject to prosecution by state and federal authorities.
Students who violate the policy, as established in Section 2D above, will
be subject to the following sanctions:
1st offense: Service will be shut off immediately and the
student will need to meet with the Chief Information Officer (CIO) to have
service reinstated. Once the student has met with CIO service will be
reinstated immediately.
2nd offense: Suspension of service for one week. Service
will be shut off immediately and the student will need to meet with the Chief
Information Officer to have service reinstated.
3rd offense: Suspension for service of one month. Service
will be shut off immediately and the student will be referred to the Student
Conduct Office. Student will be assessed a $75 service fee.
4th offense: Suspension of service for the remainder of the
academic semester plus one full academic semester beyond. Service will
be shut off immediately and the student will be referred to the Student
Conduct Office. Student will be assessed a $150 service fee.
5th offense: Suspension from College housing for the remainder
of the academic semester plus one full academic semester beyond.
