From within this page you will be shown how to setup your computer on our Network. 

Click on any of the steps to see a screen shot.

If you did not get a network card (NIC) pre-installed with your computer, install your NIC with the directions that came with your card before you start.

Windows 95/98
Windows ME
Windows 2000
Windows XP (All Flavors)
Macintosh (OS 7.6 - 9.0)


Windows 95/98
1.  Boot into Windows, and double click on "My Computer" 
2.  Double Click on "Control Panel"
3.  Double Click on "Network"
4.  Make sure that only the following are listed in the window that just appeared:
     Client for Microsoft Networks, Your network card, TCP/IP and File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks are the only items that should be listed.  If there is anything else other than that (like AOL Adapter, AOL Dialup Adapter, Dialup Adapter) click on them and hit the remove button.
5.  Click on the "Identification" tab.
Enter a computer name (It must be unique) if you choose one that has already been taken Windows will tell you the next time you reboot and you will have to change it. Enter "resnet" for the workgroup. You can leave "Computer Description" blank.
6.  Click on the "Configuration" tab again and double click on "TCP/IP" and you will get this window.  Make sure that "Obtain IP Address Automatically"
7.  Click on the "Gateway" tab.  Make sure there is nothing listed in here.  If there are any "Installed Gateways"  Click on them and hit the "remove" button.
8. Click on the "DNS Configuration" tab  Make sure "Disable DNS" is selected.  Click on "Ok", then "Ok" on the "Network Configuration" window.  Your computer will ask you to reboot.  Let it reboot and when you get back into Windows, you should be able to browse the Internet.
9. Allow your computer to reboot and follow the instructions on the Software Setup Page to configure your Internet browser
10. Download and install all updates from Windows Update.

Windows ME
1.  Boot into Windows, and double click on "My Computer" 
2.  Double Click on "Control Panel"
3.  Double Click on "Network"  If you don't see "Network" then click on the link off to the left side that says: "If you don't see an option you are looking for, view all Control Panel options".
4.  Make sure that only the following are listed in the window that just appeared:

Windows 2000
1.  Boot into Windows and double click on "My Computer"
2.  Double Click on "Control Panel"
3.  Double Click on "Network and Dialup Connections"
4.  Right mouse click on "Local Area Connection", and select properties.
5.  Double Click on TCP/IP.
6.  Make sure "Obtain and IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS Server address automatically" are checked off.
7.  Click on the "Advanced" button.  Make sure "DHCP Enabled" is displayed under "IP Address"
8.  Click on the "DNS" tab.  Make sure "Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes" is selected.  Very Important!!!  Be sure to un-check "Register this connection's address in DNS"  If you do not do this, you connection may be unreliable.
9.  Click ok and go to the Software Setup Page to configure your Internet browser.
10. Download and install all updates from Windows Update.

Windows XP (All Flavors)
1.  Boot into Windows and click on the start menu then click on "Control Panel"
2.  Double Click on "Network and Internet Connections"
3.  Double Click on "Network Connections"
4.  Right mouse click on "Local Area Connection", and select properties.
5.  Click on the "Authentication" Tab.
6.  Un-check "Enable network access control using IEEE 802.1X".
7.  Click on the "General" Tab.
5.  Double Click on TCP/IP.
6.  Make sure "Obtain and IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS Server address automatically" are checked off.
7.  Click on the "Advanced" button.  Make sure "DHCP Enabled" is displayed under "IP Address"
8.  Click on the "DNS" tab.  Make sure "Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes" is selected.  Very Important!!!  Be sure to un-check "Register this connection's address in DNS"  If you do not do this, you connection may be unreliable.
9.  Click ok and go to the Software Setup Page to configure your Internet browser.

Macintosh (OS 7.6 - 9.0)

1. Boot into MacOS, then select the "TCP/IP" control panel. It is in the "Control Panels" folder, accessible from the Apple Menu or by looking into your System Folder.
2.  In the TCP/IP Control Panel, set "Connect Via:" to Ethernet. Set "Configure" to Using DHCP Server. Enter two lines into the "Search Domains" box. The first line should read:

res.wsc.ma.edu

and the second line should read:

wsc.ma.edu

Close up the TCP/IP contol panel. The next time you open it, you should have IP numbers in the places that used to say "<will be supplied by server>"
3.  Go to the Software Setup Page to configure your Internet browser.
